Co. Cavan RFC 1st XV Defeat Virginia In Swellan Park

Co Cavan RFC 23
Virginia 22
On Saturday last November 29th near neighbours Virginia travelled to Cavan to take on the 1st XV captained by Gareth (Patch) Corrigan. Conditions were perfect for playing rugby but from the off both teams and spectators could see that it was going to be a closely contested battle. Both sides showed great skill in both defence and attack. Cavan's first points came from a well worked try when a ball came out from the forwards to the backs with some swift hands and cunning side steps Ciaran Crowe crossed the line. He also secured the conversion. The game continued with both teams scoring points due to discipline letting them down. Late in the second half Virginia crossed Cavan's try line to leave the score 22 to the visiting side with Cavan trailing at 13 points. Cavan knew they needed to give the last 20 minutes of the game their all if they were to come away victorious. Cavan worked the ball up the field with skill which tested the discipline of the visiting team. The discipline eventually broke down with a player being sent to the bin after numerous warnings by the referee. Crowe put three points more on the score bringing the gap to 5 points. Cavan kept their cool with great carries from the forwards and with gritted determination they eventually were awarded with a second visiting player being sent to the sin bin and a penalty try which was nimbly converted by Crowe. Virginia took the kick off with the referee blowing the full time whistle 30 seconds later. Cavan never dropped their heads even though they were trailing with 15 minutes to go. Ciaran Crowe got man of the match scoring 18 of the 23 points.
