Co Cavan Ladies Raise Funds for Cavan Oncology Unit
Every year The Co Cavan RFC senior ladies rugby team and the Garda ladies rugby team contest the Alex Acheson cup. This year was to be no exception. Cavan who are current holders of the cup were to host the game in Swellan Park. It was decided to make this a double header and use the game as a fundraiser for the oncology unit in Cavan as some of the ladies have family members affected by cancer. Under the captaincy of Rosie Morgan the game was organised for May.
The ladies organised a cake sale, barbeque and raffle for three fabulous hampers on the day with lots on offer for those spectating. The Garda also participated in the fundraiser bringing pink socks down for everyone to play in. Weather conditions were ideal which resulted in great attendance at the match. It is always a hotly contested match with the cup to play for and this year Co Cavan RFC came up trumps and will retain the cup for the year. Apart from the successful final result of the game the fundraiser raised €1658 for the charity presented to the oncology unit by club president Malcolm Lowry, Ladies rugby coach George Crowe, Ladies captain Rosie Morgan, Kate and Sabine Bartley.
The ladies would like to thank those who supported the day and the raffle. Thanks to all those who baked for the cake sale. Thank you to Crowes butchers for the barbeque. Thank you to the Garda team as the opposition team. Congratulations to the raffle winners 1st place Rosie Morgan, 2nd place Gene Fay and 3rd place Anne Conway.
